Kirwan Design was originally formed in 1995 in New York City and later re-established in 2018 as Kirwan Design LLC with offices in New York and London, UK. The company represents a multi-generational design family, the Kirwans and Grants, with Christopher Grant Kirwan the 10th member of his family to have graduated from Rhode Island School of Design.  Following his father Ernest Kirwan’s footsteps, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology for graduate studies and later became faculty at both Parsons and Harvard Graduate School of Design where his father also taught. His graphic design and fine arts sensitivities are influenced by his mother Constance Kirwan who was a prolific landscape painter, designer and artist. 

Building on the family design experience across the fields of urban planning, architecture, interiors, graphic design and the fine arts, Christopher has expanded these traditional mediums and professions to embody new media and emerging technologies. In his career and academic research, he has advanced areas of design including information architecture, interface design, user experience (UX) and branding, in the formation of an expertise and focus on the convergence of the physical and digital worlds. This has culminated with his focus on Smart Cities through extensive academic research and professional projects and the recently published book Smart Cities and Artificial Intelligence: Convergent Systems for Planning, Design, and Operations (see link below).

Sanah Kirwan, a graduate of Parsons School of Design, leads the interior design projects. Her life path growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, studying in New York and living in London has shaped her aesthetics, giving her a unique integrated design language sensibility drawing from both east and west cultures and classic and modern design influences. She is also an extensive social media user and the guru responsible for the design studios social media promotions.
